Busy Weekend!

My days off went by too fast and once again I spent the weekend at work. Saturday was nutso busy with maternity patients. I had two deliveries which is pretty much unheard of at the Canmore hospital to have two babies in one day, and we almost had a third but she ended up going home. It was awesome to get so much experience in one day. I'm feeling pretty comfortable in the delivery room now having been with 4 patients in there in the last week. Yesterday I worked in emerg and it was really busy too. I sent a patient to Calgary with a broken hip, there were a few strains and sprains from the ski hills and had handfuls of patients with coughs, colds, runny noses. It's such a waste of the emergency department to see patients like that. I almost want to put up a sign on the front door saying "If you have a cough, cold or runny nose go to the walk-in clinic or see your family doctor" It gets pretty frustrating after awhile. I would have never in my life considered going to the ER for a cold. It amazes me what people consider to be an "emergency" Anyways, today I'm going to help Sue move the rest of her stuff to Ryan's place and then Travis is bringing the truck tonight to help with the big stuff. I've better get some breakfast and get moving.

Days off

I've got the next two days off after working the last 2 nights. Last week I was really starting to miss my little babies and maternity patients and wouldn't you know...my last two nights have been nothing but maternity and babies! Although it wasn't exactly what I would have wanted to experience. The first night was fine. I spent the night in labor with a young girl...wait, that doesn't sound right....she was in labor and I was with her, yeah, that's better. She was amazing. The young girls always seem to do so well. They handle the pain so much better than you'd expect them too and they progress so quickly. This girl was an inspiration to all laboring women. She progressed from 0cm to 10 cm in 6 hrs and was obviously in pain but barely made a noise. I ended up missing that delivery because she got to 10cm at 7am when I was going home. Boo! Then last night I was called directly to the labor room to help with a baby that was being transported to the NICU at the Foothills. That situation wasn't much fun to experience but everyone was so fantastic that in some ways it was a good experience. The two docs were amazing and the NICU transport team was unbelievable. The team is made up of nurses and respiratory techs from the NICU and I used to work with all of them when I worked in the Special Care nursery so that was fun. The amount of knowledge those girls have is unreal. I got to call my old postpartum unit when we transferred the mom there and my friend Lisette answered the phone and she was like "I didn't think you did labor and delivery!" and I was like "I DON'T!" It was pretty funny. So now I'm off till Saturday!
Andrea and Allison came out last Friday for a Girls Night. Travis spent the night at the firehall doing a ride along with EMS but they didn't get any calls so he basically just slept over at the hall. We had so much fun. We went for dinner at the Grizzly Paw then rented movies and had some drinks and junk food at home in our PJ's. It was just like a sleepover when we were kids...minus the drinking of course. Then on Saturday Travis came home and made us breakfast after saving the Rose and Crown from a grease fire, he's my hero. After breakfast we went downtown and did some shopping and the girls went home. Travis and I had a quiet afternoon at home then met some friends at The Drake for dinner.
Sunday ended up being a "sick day" We went for breakfast with the guys from the hall as usual. Then neither one of us was feeling well so we rented movies and spent the next 12hrs on the couch. We still weren't feeling well on Family Day Monday so again we spent most of the day on the couch till I went to work. Travis is still sick with a cough and ended up working from home yesterday but made it to work this morning. Hopefully he's surviving at work today.
Gotta get on with laundry since I've slept most of the day away.

I'm a prisioner!

I'm a prisioner in my own home today waiting for Shaw to get here. We've switched from Telus to Shaw for our phone line so they're coming 'sometime today' to hook it up. It sucks that they don't give you a time when they're going to be here it's just 'sometime today' Great, so now I have to stay home all day waiting for them. Oh well, I didn't have anything to do today anyways and it's probably a good opportunity to get some studying done. Which I'm not doing, of course, and instead writing a blog.
I've been given the green light from my physiotherapist to start some sort of exercise routine. I dunno about that, my gut feeling is that it's too early and I'm going to pay for it but I'm going to start easy with some yoga. There's a class tonight at the Yoga Lounge downtown called Yin Yoga, apparently it's a slow, meditative type yoga. Not really my idea of exercise but I'll give it a whirl. I'm more of a cardio junkie in the gym, playing soccer, running, swimming, that's my idea of exercise, not slow moving meditation.
My good friends, Allison and Andrea are coming out from Calgary tomorrow night for a Girls Night. I'm really excited. I havn't seen them in a LONG time. They are the girls that I went to Vegas with in October. We have lots of fun. We'll finally get to use our guest room! I'd better go clean it up.

A whole week off!

I finished my night shift this morning and now I have a whole week off!!! Yeah!!! I can't wait for my massage this afternoon. I'm stiff as a board after working my two nights. I've also started acupuncture and craniosacral therapy. All acupuncture does is give me huge bruises where they stick the needles in. Craniosacral might take a few sessions to see any benefit but it definately felt...hmmm...interesting...at the time. I could really feel the pain moving around in my neck and she was able to tell me where she was feeling tension and pain and it was exactly where I was feeling it so I'm optimistic that it will help over time.

I finished my book and I highly recommend that any sister, mother, aunt, nurse, woman.....READ IT! It was amazing. I couldn't put it down at the end so I was up till 1:30am and bawling my eyes out at the end praying that Travis wouldn't wake up to witness it. It's called My Sisters Keeper and I can't remember who it's by and I already lent it out to a girl at work. It's about a family who's 3 year old daughter is diagnosed with leukemia and they genetically manufacture another child who is a perfect genetic match to be a 'donor sister' Read it!

Travis has fire practice on Valentines Day so we're celebrating on the 13th which also happens to be our 4 month anniversary. Travis thinks that Valentines Day is too over commercialized (whatever) and that it will be better to celebrate on our anniversary because it's OUR day. Whatever....I guess he's right.

Cinderella

I spent today doing laundry, vacuuming, washing floors, walls, cupboards, bathrooms....This house is cleaner than ever! I don't know what got into me. It was so nice outside today I opened all the blinds and the sliding door in the kitchen to let some fresh air and sunshine in then I turned up the music and cleaned like a mad woman. Now I'm going to work on something for dinner, peanut butter pudding cake for dessert and chocolate chip cookies for lunches this week. I feel like a modern day Cinderella except for the fact that unlike Cinderella I've already found my prince ;o)
